The Global Neuro Research Coalition works to advance global brain health research through an international network of neurologists, neuroscientists, and allied specialties, with the ultimate aim of improving patient outcomes.
The Coalition enables members of the interdisciplinary global neurology community to collaborate on translational research through identification of priorities and relevant evidence synthesis, harmonization of research tools, development of clinical guidance by establishing open lines of communication between international colleagues and institutions, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
Areas of Focus
Below are some of the key areas that the Coalition is currently focusing on, particularly in its work together with the WHO Neurology and COVID-19 Global Forum.
Acute Clinical Care
The Coalition is focused on understanding and improving the clinical management of patients affected by COVID-19 who develop acute neurological complications during the acute admission.
The Coalition is focused on investigating disruptions to essential neurological services around the world during the COVID-19 pandemic. By learning about mitigation strategies taken as well as gaps in service delivery, we aim to improve continuity of care for chronic neurological disease in crisis situations and to inform the strengthening of healthcare systems in the future.
The Coalition actively collaborated with the WHO to develop case report forms for neurologists and other clinicians to evaluate neurological symptoms that arise during or after acute COVID-19 infection. To read more, download the Post COVID-19 CRF(link is external).
Additionally, members of the Coalition have developed data collection forms for reporting neurological adverse events that occur after COVID-19 vaccinations. These forms can be used to track the appearance of specific neurological conditions after vaccinations and compare this with the typical prevalence of these conditions in the general public. To read preliminary evidence regarding this prevalence and access the data collection forms here(link is external).
The Coalition is actively investigating the long-term neurological effects of COVID-19 infection. It has published methodological guidelines for Neuro-COVID research (which can be found in our list of publications) and is working on a systematic review on this topic.
Vaccine Neurological Adverse Events
The Coalition has published two papers based on data compiled from the US Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System, which analyzed the prevalence of neurological manifestations and specifically headaches after COVID-19 vaccinations. Please see Publications for more information.
